Our local lawmakers are now weighing in on the flooding in Texas and what should and shouldn’t be done to help. Western Mass News sat down with Congressman Richard Neal to find out what could come next.

Over the weekend it was Texas, but in 2011, it was us. Whether it’s water or wind, south or north, red or blue, Congressman Richard Neal wants all of us to remember — we need to be there for each other.

“We don’t ask what state you’re from. We say this is about the American family. We come to their aid,” he emphasized.

That aid could be expensive, but Neal says just how much money and exactly when the federal government will give it is still up in the air.

“Well, I think that congress is still in session for the next three weeks, and we’ll have an opportunity to appropriate what is ever needed,” he answered when asked what the timeline could be.

That need is coming at a time our country is facing intense political division and economic uncertainty, but the congressman says he and other lawmakers will put helping people above petty differences and arguments about money.

“We will have to open up the checkbook to come to the aid of those people who right now in Texas are hurting. I’m all in favor of it. We should all rally to help people out of this tragedy.
