CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – The government shutdown has reached its 29th day, with local officials expressing concern as no resolution appears imminent.

As the shutdown continues, SNAP benefits are set to end on November 1st, and federal funds for communities are running low. This has increased pressure on officials to reach an agreement.

Congressman Richard Neal emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, “There are a million veterans who rely on nutrition benefits, people who go to work every day who don’t make enough money, they rely on this and how about our grocery store and outlets who provide the benefit. This is unnecessarily cruel and we’re here and ready to negotiate.”

During the stalemate between Democrats and Republicans, President Trump has been in South Korea for his Asia diplomacy tour. Congressman Neal mentioned that they are waiting for the President’s return to negotiate.

Neal also warned that people will soon see a significant increase in health insurance premiums, with open enrollment beginning on Saturday. Suggestions have been made to use the available $5 million of contingency money for nutrition programs in the emergency, and Neal urges the President to do so.

Congressman Neal highlighted the plight of government employees who have been furloughed, asserting that they deserve to be paid. He noted that tensions are rising for good reasons and that Democrats are ready to negotiate.

President Trump was scheduled to return to the United States earlier Wednesday afternoon, which may provide an opportunity for negotiations to resume.
