Press Release

Washington, DC – United States Congressman Richard E. Neal issued the following statement after the House of Representatives passed H.R. 1, the For the People Act, today by a margin of 234-193.

“The passage of H.R. 1 is a major step in the right direction,” said Congressman Richard E. Neal, Chairman of the House Committee on Ways and Means. “Through this legislation, our campaign finance system will see more transparency and less dominance of big money. Democrats have worked hard to ensure that they keep their promises to stand up to corporations, make sure the government works for everyday Americans, and guarantees that all voices are heard. The inclusion of Representative John Lewis’ provision, the Voter Empowerment Act, will safeguard every citizen’s right to vote, including those who complete prison sentences for felonies. Access to early and absentee voting will be expanded, and automatic voter registration will be established. This is a good news story and I am happy to have voted for this bill.”
