SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – There’s an increase in police presence around American International College after a week of violence on the streets outside the campus.

Last Tuesday night, a bullet ricocheted and hit a window at the “Hive” dining commons on campus. The day after that, shell casings were found on Burr Street, about a half-mile from campus. And earlier in April, a bullet hit the window of the Campus Center.

22News spoke with Congressman Richard Neal, a graduate of AIC. We asked him if he thought students were safe. He said, “I don’t think that there’s anything to be concerned about here in terms of campus safety. How about kids walking around Springfield? Well, you can’t control that in any urban setting, but my judgment and memory, this has been a very safe campus.”

Springfield Police and AIC police have increased their presence around campus. They’re working with state and federal law enforcement to decrease the violence in the Mason Square neighborhood.
