Washington, DC
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – The Obama administration is pushing a new plan that would grant the President more powers to negotiate trade deals with other countries.
Calling it “the right thing to do for the American economy,” President Obama said the U.S. should be able to access other markets the same way they access ours.
The President needs help from congressional Democrats, amid worries the trade treaty could cost American jobs.
Massachusetts Congressmen Richard Neal and Joe Kennedy both said it’s not good for Massachusetts. Keneddy told 22News, “There are communities out there that are fighting and scratching and clawing their way back to a place where they not just can survive economically but thrive, and at the moment, we feel like they’re getting there. We need to talk about not just trade and rules of the road, but investments in our education system.”
The 12-nation Trans-Pacific Partnership would be the largest free-trade agreement in history.
