Massachusetts Congressman Richard Neal says major public works projects should be leveraged for western Massachusetts if Boston is chosen to host the 2024 Olympics.
Neal says Boston is going to have to rebuild its transportation infrastructure to successfully hold the games. But unlike with the Big Dig project, he says Worcester, Springfield and Pittsfield must be included.
“I believe that none of us are naive enough to believe that there won’t be public expenditure,” Neal says. “Our ask should be improved east-west rail to accommodate and complement north-south rail transportation here in for western and central Massachusetts.”
Neal’s comments came at an event Monday announcing the state has committed $12 million to finish the redevelopment of Springfield’s Union Station. It’s scheduled to re-open late next year.
