WASHINGTON, DC— Ways and Means Committee Ranking Member Richard E. Neal (D-MA) released the following statement after Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-MD) announced he would not seek reelection, retiring after a career in public service that spans decades in the House and in Democratic leadership:
“There are few who can match the record of success that Leader Hoyer has acclaimed through his decades of leadership. For Steny, it’s always been about delivering for the little guy. With an unwavering resolve to deliver a better and fairer future, the people of Maryland have had a champion focused on results.
“The accomplishments of Congress in the last 40 years have all had the fingerprints of Steny Hoyer on them in some way or another. A masterful legislator, his leadership delivered on the Affordable Care Act, relief during the COVID pandemic, the Inflation Reduction Act, and so much more. For me, it was our partnership to make the new courthouse in Springfield a reality.
“He has been a great partner and a great friend. The House as an institution, and our democracy at large, are stronger because of Leader Hoyer. I will miss his voice here in the House but wish him and his family the best in this well-deserved, well-earned next chapter.”
