Pittsfield, MA

Pittsfield – Berkshire Housing Development hosted a dedication ceremony at Bostwick Gardens, 899 Main Street in Great Barrington to honor those who made the development possible and to welcome Bostwick Gardens newest residents on Thursday, October 10, 2019.

Many local, state, and federal elected officials were represented at the event. The lenders and the entire development team were represented as well. Also there to be recognized for their efforts in making this development a reality were representatives of the St. James Housing Corporation, the original sponsor and owner of Bostwick Gardens who have worked tirelessly to ensure that Bostwick’s residents enjoy safe, supportive affordable homes.

“I am a proud supporter of the Low Income Housing Tax Credit program that helped make this project possible with $11.2 million,” said Congressman Richard E. Neal. “Housing, and particularly, low-income senior housing is vital to any community with an aging population. I am proud to be a champion of those tax credits that made this expansion possible for the countless seniors who will benefit.”

Berkshire Housing Services, Inc., the property management firm, is now leasing the 31 new apartments which will bring the total households living in the development to 60 (including the original 28 apartments which were completed in 1987.)

Berkshire Housing Development Corporation has consistently provided assistance to all of the residents and towns of Berkshire County by creating, preserving, and managing affordable housing. Through its programs and supports, they strive to prevent homelessness, foster economic self-sufficiency, and ensure housing stability for everyone in the Berkshire County area. BHDC is the regional contractor for the Department of Housing and Community Development’s Housing Choice Voucher Program managing six hundred and fifty vouchers and operates the region’s Housing Consumer Education Center (HCEC), in partnership with Berkshire County Regional Housing Authority (BCRHA). The HCEC serves as a single source of information, referrals and services for anyone with a housing related issue. Tenants, landlords, prospective buyers, and homeowners can access information designed to maximize housing stability, strengthen investments, and minimize disputes.

Financing for the project came from a variety of sources including: Massachusetts Department of Housing and Community Development, Community Economic Assistance Corporation, MassHousing, Blue Hub, Boston Financial Investment Management, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, and the Town of Great Barrington.
